Crossing the Rio
Grande into 1960’s
Mexico was adventure sure enough;
but when you pushed on to the seventh or
eighth pass of the Mexican Laguna Madre
dreams of everything a rod and reel was
supposed to be became reality. Sea-life of
all sorts was plentiful, plentiful to the point
of never imagining an end to what lay before
you.

The Tool that Tops the List
|
Fishing fanatics tend to accumulate
piles, if not tons, of equipment. For most, generating a complete
inventory of equipment would require the use of a legal pad or long
spreadsheet. In addition to the substantial and obvious things, a
thorough list would likely include a wide array of seldom-used, yet important
tools. Coastal wadefishing freaks like me keep a costly collection...

Mr. Murphy Goes Fishing
|
We’d planned the trip for weeks.
Friends, JR Jr. from
Beaumont and his dad, JR Sr., of Conroe
had a house lined up down at Charlie’s Bait
Camp on the ICW near Seadrift and they wanted
to go fishing. They made the long drive down
on Friday and my son and I met them there.
Expectations were high since our esteemed
Editor and Publisher of this fine publication had
told me of a top-secret...

Control is the Name of the Game
|
In fishing, just as in life, you must exhibit
control in all types of situations. The
guy who cut you off on the highway,
the unpleasant waiter, the annoying
telemarketers, and the neighbor’s yapping
little dog are all prime examples of situations
that test our self-control. Some people just
can’t deal with it, they just can’t let it go and
get on with whatever they were doing.

Sweet Water

Sunrise
wakes that telltale a fish’s size
and, most importantly, excited
anglers on the Lower Laguna Madre are all
pretty sweet. Let me begin by giving you a bit of
background on the anglers. First would be our
guide, Captain Ernest Cisneros, no stranger to
TSF readers. Second is my husband, Jackson,
avid angler. Third is my grandfather, Zavala,
lifelong freshwater fisherman. And finally there’s
me, a novice angler.

Panga offers nearshore excitement…
|
I grew up fishing for
tarpon; landing my first at the ripe
old age of fourteen. That fish measured
a bit longer than six feet and upon returning
to the farm I ran inside very excited and told
Mama about this most grand of creatures I
had caught.
I’ll never forget the way she glared at Papa,
"You have absolutely ruined this boy," she said.

Disastrous Ike
It is Tuesday September 16 and coastal Texas
from Brazoria County to the Louisiana border is reeling from the blow of Hurricane Ike. Residents along the Texas-Louisiana
border have taken their fourth beating since the summer of 2005. The IH-45
corridor from Galveston to Conroe and all of the greater Houston metropolitan
area has suffered enormously.
